Traditional Chinese characters are a profound cultural asset unique to Taiwan, yet designers dedicated to localized typography remain relatively scarce. The project "Island of Characters" seeks to capture authentic Taiwanese identity by drawing inspiration from native literature. By extracting the rustic essence of traditional "stone tools" and the ingenious "tenon-and-mortise" joints of early architecture, we have developed a novel typeface that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern visual design. To physicalize this concept, we designed an introductory book utilizing an innovative binding technique. Entirely assembled without the use of threads, glue, or metal nails, the book's structure directly mirrors the interlocking nature of tenon-and-mortise joints. Furthermore, this eco-friendly approach resonates with the growing international emphasis on environmental sustainability. Through this project, we aim to use typography as a cultural medium to promote the rich heritage of Taiwan, presenting a design solution that is both culturally significant and ecologically responsible.
